Description
So once again I'm sitting on a US Airways Airbus A321 airplane, on my way home from the ACORD/LOMA Conference in Orlando, Florida, where I also attended our ACT and AUGIE Committee meetings. Once again I open up today's issue of the USA Today newspaper, and one of the first columns I see includes a picture of a crew lifting the remains of US flight 1549 from the Hudson River, along with an article detailing how US Airways has cleaned and returned almost all of the personal belongings of the passengers aboard that ill fated flight last January 17th. Reading about how these items have all been cleaned of jet fuel, spillage, and mostly gunk from the murky, PCB filled waters of the Hudson, not being superstitious or the like, or even seeing any birds up at this altitude, I still decided that reading this article at 32,000 feet, riding aboard the same type of aircraft that the writer of the USA Today article was speaking of, is probably not such a good idea, especially since Orlando has been experiencing three days of heavy storms and the airplane I am riding in has been tossing us around since "wheels up" as though we were riding on "Space Mountain". So I decided to put away the newspaper and write an article. Speaking of jet fuel, we've all been to the pump and said those magic words, "Fill'er up!" to the gas station attendant (mostly in New Jersey where you are not allowed to dispense your own fuel as in the other states where us New Yorkers don't have the patience to wait for someone to come over and attend to our "fueling needs". Typically in New Jersey, we hand the attendant a credit or debit card (because who carries cash anymore these days?), tell them to "Filler up", get our windshield cleaned, get a receipt, tip the attendant a couple of bucks, and we're on our way down the turnpike ("What exit?" as they say in Jersey. By the way, I have always wondered why "Jersey" is the only state that when you speak of it you drop the "New". No one ever says that they live in "York" or "Hampshire". Hmmm, good idea for me to research this for another article ... chances are good that there is an insurance reason behind it!).
